Let’s face it; the fact that the Palm Pre is even being compared to the Apple iPhone is a compliment. I’m sure more units have sold due to this. However, in my humble opinion, Palm has not only made a good effort, but also one that may push Apple even further.

The iPhone has been a clear forerunner for years now. Each attempt at an “iPhone-Killer” has appeared flimsy at best. So many full touch screen phones have come and gone, yet the iPhone remains. The Samsung Instinct 1 and 2 the LG Dare, the LG Vu and on and on the list goes, have all gone the way of the dinosaur. The T-Mobile G1 utilizing the Google Android OS (built on a stripped Linux kernel) was the first phone to show any promise. However, it fell short of expectation in regards to sales. In my opinion, this was due to the network on which it was released. However, it looks like there’ll be a new Android phone and it looks to be pretty promising! Even boasting some of the same moves both the Palm Pre and the Apple iPhone have. It’ll be manufactured by HTC and will be called the “HTC Hero”.

The Palm Pre is the first phone to truly compete with the iPhone. With its multitasking abilities, synergy, unobtrusive notifications, universal search, and the list goes on, Apple has its work cut out for them. To me, the only edge the iPhone has on the Pre is its apps. The iPhone has thousands upon thousands apps, while the Pre still has around thirty or so. For me though, I’ll take thirty useful apps over the iPhones million fart apps. Yes, I said it. Most of the iPhone apps do not extend to you and real use other than entertainment and even that’s questionable. I’m not saying the iPhone doesn’t have some really nice apps, I’m just saying most of them are a waist of your flash-drive space.

All and all, I think having another class-A phone on the market will be good for Apple, Palm, and Google-Android. As we all know, competition inevitably creates a better product, as well as a better price for the consumer. I’m looking forward to what happens with these phones and OS’s in the future.
